General Strategy Help

So yeah I'm new to TPM 2008 and I was just looking around the forum and I can't seem to find a basic strategy thread.  Could anyone lay out a general way to get things started off on the right foot.  the tutorial isn't what I'm accustomed to in modern video games, so my jump in head first strategy failed miserably.  thanks in advance
